What is the difference between E40 and E27 sockets?

The E40 socket has a 40 mm diameter threaded base (Giant Edison Screw), while the E27 socket measures 27 mm (standard Edison Screw). E40 is used for high-wattage industrial and street lighting applications (50 to 400 watts), whereas E27 serves residential and commercial fixtures (5 to 25 watts). The two sockets are not interchangeable — an E40 bulb will not fit an E27 fixture and vice versa. Both operate on 230 V mains voltage, but E40 bulbs deliver significantly higher lumen outputs (8,000 to 27,000 lm) compared to typical E27 LEDs (400 to 2,500 lm).

Can I use E40 LED bulbs without rewiring my existing fixtures?

Yes, E40 LED bulbs fit directly into existing E40 sockets, but you must bypass or remove the old ballast used by discharge lamps (HQL, HQI, HPS). E40 LEDs have an integrated driver and require direct connection to 230 V mains voltage. Leaving the ballast in circuit will cause flickering, reduced lifespan or immediate failure. The bypass procedure involves disconnecting the ballast output wires and connecting mains live and neutral directly to the socket terminals. Once the ballast is bypassed, the E40 LED bulb screws in like any other lamp and operates instantly without warm-up time.

What wattage E40 LED replaces a 400-watt metal halide lamp?

A 100 to 150-watt E40 LED bulb replaces a 400-watt metal halide (HQI) lamp, delivering equivalent or higher lumen output (15,000 to 27,000 lumens) while consuming 60 to 75 % less energy. The exact replacement depends on the application: high bay warehouses with 10-metre ceilings typically use 120 to 150-watt E40 LEDs, while street lighting at 8 metres can use 80 to 100-watt models. Always compare lumen output rather than wattage — a quality 100-watt E40 LED produces more usable light than an old 400-watt metal halide due to better colour rendering and directional beam control.

Do E40 LED bulbs need a ballast bypass?

Yes, E40 LED bulbs require ballast bypass when retrofitting fixtures originally designed for discharge lamps (HQL, HQI, HPS). Traditional discharge lamps need a ballast to regulate current and provide high-voltage ignition; E40 LEDs have an internal driver and must connect directly to 230 V mains. Leaving the ballast in circuit wastes energy, generates heat and can damage the LED driver. The bypass procedure involves opening the luminaire, disconnecting the ballast output wires and connecting mains live and neutral directly to the E40 socket terminals. Some bulbs are marketed as "ballast-compatible," but bypassing still improves efficiency and lifespan.

What is the typical lumen output for E40 LED bulbs?

E40 LED bulbs deliver lumen outputs ranging from 8,000 lumens (50-watt models) to 27,000 lumens (150-watt models), depending on wattage and design. A 50 to 80-watt E40 LED produces 8,000 to 12,000 lumens, suitable for replacing 150 to 250-watt discharge lamps in medium-height applications. 100 to 120-watt models output 15,000 to 20,000 lumens, replacing 400-watt metal halide or sodium lamps in high bay warehouses and street lighting. Premium 150-watt E40 LEDs reach 25,000 to 27,000 lumens for the most demanding industrial and outdoor applications. Always check the manufacturer's datasheet for exact lumen figures and beam angle.

Are E40 LED bulbs suitable for outdoor street lighting?

Yes, E40 LED bulbs are ideal for outdoor street lighting when rated IP65 or higher for full weatherproofing against rain, dust and temperature extremes. Street lighting E40 LEDs typically use 80 to 100 watts, delivering 12,000 to 18,000 lumens with wide 140° to 180° beam angles to illuminate road surfaces evenly. They replace 250 to 400-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, cutting energy consumption by 70 to 80 % and eliminating the warm-up delay of discharge lamps. Municipalities favour E40 LEDs for their 50,000-hour lifespan (17+ years at 8 hours per night), reducing maintenance call-outs and ladder truck costs.

How long do E40 LED bulbs last compared to discharge lamps?

E40 LED bulbs last 50,000 hours or more (L80 rating), compared to 12,000 to 24,000 hours for metal halide (HQI) lamps and 16,000 to 32,000 hours for high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. At 8 hours per day operation, an E40 LED runs for 17 years before reaching 80 % of initial lumen output, versus 4 to 8 years for discharge lamps. This extended lifespan slashes maintenance costs — fewer bulb changes, less ladder time, reduced labour. E40 LEDs also maintain stable light output throughout their life, whereas discharge lamps suffer rapid lumen depreciation in the final third of their rated life.

What colour temperature should I choose for E40 LED bulbs?

Choose warm white 2,700 K E40 LEDs for residential streets, hospitality exteriors and areas where a welcoming golden glow is desired — this mimics the colour of old high-pressure sodium lamps. Neutral white 4,000 K suits industrial halls, warehouses, workshops and retail back-of-house areas, balancing visibility and comfort. Cool daylight 5,000 to 6,000 K maximises contrast and alertness, preferred in precision assembly lines, quality-control stations, security lighting and high bay applications where accurate colour perception is critical. Colour rendering index (CRI) above 80 Ra ensures natural colour reproduction; for retail and showroom use, specify CRI 90+ E40 LEDs.
