Incidentally, the letter "G" stands for glass, of which the socket is usually made, while the number after it indicates the distance between the two pins in millimetres. These pins are made of metal, which hardly corrodes even at higher temperatures, and are rounded or pointed at the end to make it easy to insert into the contact springs of the holder.
