What is the difference between a 1-phase and a 3-phase track?

A 1-phase track carries a single electrical circuit, so all luminaires on the track switch on and off together. It requires only a standard 3-wire cable and suits small rooms where one lighting scene is sufficient. A 3-phase track carries three independent circuits, each switchable and dimmable separately, and requires a 5-wire cable. The 3-phase system is the professional choice for retail shops, restaurants, galleries and larger living spaces where different lighting zones — ambient, accent and feature — need to be controlled independently.

Are 3-phase tracks standardised across brands?

The Euro adapter used to mount luminaires onto 3-phase tracks is an industry-wide standard, meaning a luminaire from Eutrac, SLV, Global, Erco, Ivela or Staff will fit any modern 3-phase track profile. However, the track sections and mechanical connectors themselves are not standardised — Eutrac track sections connect only to Eutrac accessories, and SLV S-Track sections connect only to SLV S-Track components. When planning a system, choose one track brand throughout and mix luminaire brands freely via the Euro adapter.

What is a 3-phase rail?

A 3-phase rail — also called a 3-phase power track or 3-phase busbar track — is the extruded aluminium profile that forms the backbone of a 3-phase track lighting system. It houses five integrated copper conductors (L1, L2, L3, N, PE) and a continuous mechanical slot into which Euro adapter-equipped luminaires are inserted and locked. Standard rail lengths are 1 m, 2 m and 3 m; all can be cut to a shorter length on site. Rails are available in surface-mounted, recessed and pendant-suspended variants.

How do you connect and install a 3-phase track system?

Installing a 3-phase track system requires a 5-wire mains cable (L1, L2, L3, N, PE) run to the ceiling outlet point — this must be carried out by a qualified electrician. The power feed-in unit connects the cable to the track and can be positioned at the left end, right end or centre of the run. Track sections are screwed to the ceiling using the pre-drilled fixing holes. Sections are joined with straight, L-, T- or X-connectors. All open ends must be closed with end caps. Luminaires are then inserted via their Euro adapter and assigned to a circuit using the phase selector wheel.

Which spots and luminaires are compatible with a 3-phase track?

Any luminaire fitted with a standardised Euro adapter is compatible with a 3-phase track, regardless of brand. The most common luminaire type is an adjustable GU10 track spot, accepting LED lamps of 5 W–15 W. Pendant luminaires and flat LED panels can also be integrated using the appropriate Euro adapter. For retail and hospitality, GU10 LED spots with a colour temperature of 3000 K or 4000 K and a CRI of 90 or above are recommended. Brands including SLV, Eutrac, Global, Erco and Ivela all produce Euro adapter-compatible luminaires.

How much load can a 3-phase track carry?

Each of the three circuits in a 3-phase track can carry a maximum of 16 A at 230 V, equating to approximately 3,680 W per phase. The total system capacity across all three phases is therefore around 11,000 W. In LED installations, this limit is rarely approached: a 10 W GU10 LED spot allows up to 368 spots per phase in theory. A practical retail installation of 20–30 spots across all three phases typically loads each phase with only 40–100 W. The 16 A limit becomes relevant mainly when mixing in higher-wattage decorative or legacy halogen luminaires.

Can a 3-phase track system be dimmed?

Yes, 3-phase track systems support several dimming technologies. Phase-cut dimming (leading-edge or trailing-edge) is the most common: a dimmer is wired into one or more circuits, and all dimmable luminaires on that circuit dim together. For individual luminaire control, DALI-compatible tracks and drivers allow each fitting to be addressed separately via a DALI controller — the professional standard for commercial installations. Wireless Casambi control can be layered onto DALI or mains-dimmable systems. In all cases, the luminaires themselves must be rated as dimmable; always verify compatibility between the dimmer type and the LED lamp or driver.
