LED Profiles – The Professional Housing for Your LED Strip Lights

An LED profile transforms a bare LED strip into a clean, polished lighting installation. Whether you are fitting under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen, creating architectural cove lighting in a hotel lobby, or illuminating retail shelving, the right aluminium channel protects your strip, manages heat, and delivers a seamless, dot-free finish.

At Leuchtmittel Verkauf, you will find LED profiles for every mounting situation — surface mounted, recessed, plaster-in, corner, suspended and IP-rated waterproof types — all compatible with standard SMD and COB LED strips. Choose your profile, pair it with the correct LED driver, and you have a complete, professional linear lighting solution ready to install.

What Is an LED Profile and How Does It Work?

An LED profile — also called an LED channel, LED extrusion or aluminium channel — is a precisely shaped housing that holds and protects an LED strip light. The profile serves three core functions: it provides a rigid, durable enclosure for the flexible strip; it acts as a heat sink, drawing heat away from the LEDs to extend their operational lifespan; and it holds a diffuser cover that spreads light evenly, eliminating the visible dot effect that bare strips produce.

How an LED Profile Differs from Other Linear Lighting Products

A bare LED strip taped directly to a surface is functional but fragile — it is exposed to dust, moisture and physical contact, and the individual LED points are clearly visible. A profile solves all three problems at once. Unlike a complete LED batten fitting (which is a sealed, self-contained luminaire), a profile system gives you full flexibility: you choose the strip type, the colour temperature, the wattage density and the diffuser finish independently.

Compared to a fluorescent T8 batten, an LED profile system running a 24V COB strip typically consumes 50–70% less energy for equivalent lumen output, requires no starter or ballast, and can be dimmed smoothly from 0–100% with a compatible PWM or TRIAC dimmer — something conventional fluorescent fittings cannot achieve.

The Role of Aluminium

Aluminium alloy is the material of choice for LED profiles because it combines low weight with excellent thermal conductivity. The profile body conducts heat away from the LED strip's PCB and dissipates it into the surrounding air, keeping junction temperatures low. Lower operating temperatures directly translate to longer LED lifespan — a strip running at 25°C above ambient will typically last significantly longer than one running at 50°C above ambient. The rigid aluminium body also gives the finished installation a solid, premium feel that plastic alternatives cannot match.

Profile Types by Mounting Style

Choosing the correct mounting type is the first decision in any LED profile project. Each style suits different surfaces, installation stages and aesthetic outcomes.

Surface Mounted Profiles

Surface mounted profiles fix directly onto walls, ceilings, furniture or shelving without any routing or cutting into the substrate. They are the fastest and most versatile option, ideal for kitchen under-cabinet lighting, display shelving, wardrobe interiors and retail fixture lighting. Most surface profiles accept strip widths of 8–17mm and are available in standard lengths of 1m, 2m and 3m.

Recessed Profiles

Recessed profiles sit inside a routed channel cut into timber, MDF or plasterboard, finishing flush with the surface. Only the diffused light is visible — no housing hardware at all. This style suits staircases, alcoves, wardrobe interiors and any project where clean, minimal aesthetics are the priority. You will need to route a channel to the correct depth before installation; most recessed profiles are 7–15mm deep.

Plaster-In (Trimless) Profiles

Plaster-in profiles are set into walls or ceilings at first-fix stage, before plastering. The plasterer skims directly over the flanges, leaving a perfectly flush linear aperture in the finished surface with no visible housing. The result is a level of refinement that no surface-mounted profile can match. These profiles are popular with kitchen designers, interior architects and high-specification residential projects. They must be planned and installed before plastering — retrofitting is not possible.

Corner Profiles (45° and 90°)

Corner profiles mount at a 45° angle in internal corners, projecting light diagonally across a surface. They are particularly effective for kitchen worktop lighting, display shelving and retail fixture lighting where angled illumination is more flattering than direct downlighting. Beam angles on corner profiles typically reach 114°, giving wide, even coverage.

Suspended / Pendant Profiles

Suspended profiles hang from the ceiling on cables or rods, functioning as pendant linear luminaires. They suit open-plan offices, restaurant dining areas and showrooms where a floating linear light adds both illumination and visual structure to the space.

Floor, Stair Nosing and Coving Profiles

Stair nosing profiles are designed to be inset into the leading edge of stair treads, providing both safety lighting and a contemporary architectural detail. Coving and skirting profiles follow the junction of walls and ceilings or floors, creating indirect ambient light that defines the geometry of a room.

Waterproof and IP-Rated Profiles

For bathrooms, outdoor eaves, garden steps and other moisture-exposed locations, IP65 or IP67-rated profiles are essential. These sealed extrusions protect the LED strip from water ingress. In bathrooms, IP65 is required in zones 1 and 2 (within 0.6m of a water source); for fully outdoor or submerged applications, IP67 or higher is recommended. Pair these profiles with an IP-rated LED driver located outside the wet zone.

Choosing the Right Size, Length and Strip Compatibility

Getting the dimensions right before you order saves time and avoids costly remeasuring. Here is what to check.

Profile Length

LED profiles are most commonly available in 1m, 2m and 3m lengths. For most domestic runs — kitchen plinths, under-cabinet strips, wardrobe lighting — 2m lengths are the practical standard. For longer commercial runs in retail or hospitality, 3m lengths reduce the number of joins. Many profiles can be cut to a shorter length on site using a fine-toothed hacksaw or mitre saw, so ordering the next length up and cutting to fit is a common and cost-effective approach.

Strip Width Compatibility

The internal channel width of the profile must match or exceed the width of your LED strip. Standard SMD strips are typically 8mm, 10mm or 12mm wide; high-density COB strips can reach 12–20mm. Always check the maximum strip width specification of the profile before ordering — a 12mm internal channel will not accept a 15mm COB strip. Most surface and recessed profiles accept strips up to 12mm; wider plaster-in profiles can accommodate strips up to 20mm.

SMD vs. COB Strip Compatibility

Both SMD (Surface Mounted Device) and COB (Chip on Board) strips work inside aluminium profiles. COB strips produce an even, continuous line of light with no visible individual LED points, making them particularly well suited to profiles with opal diffusers where a perfectly uniform glow is the goal. SMD strips with higher chip counts (e.g. 120 LEDs/m or 240 LEDs/m) also perform well under an opal diffuser.

Beam Angle

The diffuser shape influences the effective beam angle of the finished installation. Flat diffusers on surface profiles typically deliver beam angles of 105°–108°; domed diffusers on corner profiles reach up to 114°; micro profiles with narrow apertures can be as tight as 95°. For wide, even ambient lighting, choose a wider beam angle; for accent or display lighting, a narrower angle concentrates the light more precisely.

Diffusers, Finishes and Light Quality

The diffuser cover is the optical component of the LED profile system — it determines how the light looks to the eye and how evenly it is distributed across a surface.

Diffuser Types

  • Opal diffuser: Completely conceals the LED strip and produces a smooth, even glow with no visible hotspots or dot effect. Ideal for ambient lighting, cove lighting and any installation where the light source itself should be invisible.
  • Semi-clear diffuser: Provides partial diffusion — the strip is slightly visible but hotspots are reduced. Useful where a higher lumen output through the cover is needed.
  • Transparent / clear diffuser: Offers maximum light transmission with minimal diffusion. The LED strip is visible through the cover. Best suited to accent or display lighting where output efficiency is the priority.
  • Black diffuser: Combines a black body finish with a dark-tinted cover for installations where the profile should be visually recessive — retail display cases, cinema rooms and architectural feature lighting.

Diffuser Shape

Flat diffusers are the standard choice for surface and recessed profiles, sitting flush with the top of the extrusion. Domed diffusers are used on corner profiles and some surface profiles to widen the beam angle and increase the illuminated surface area.

Body Finishes

Aluminium LED profiles are available in silver (natural anodised), white (powder-coated) and black (anodised or powder-coated). Silver suits modern, industrial and Scandinavian interiors; white blends with painted ceilings and walls; black creates a bold, contemporary contrast and is increasingly popular in retail and hospitality design.

Colour Temperature and CRI — Plan Before You Buy

The profile itself is colour-neutral, but the LED strip you install inside it determines the light quality of the finished installation. For residential living spaces, 2700K–3000K (warm white) creates a comfortable, inviting atmosphere. Retail and hospitality environments often benefit from 3000K–4000K with a CRI of 90 or above to render product colours accurately and make food and merchandise look their best. Office and task lighting typically uses 4000K–5000K (cool white) for alertness and visual clarity. Always specify your strip's colour temperature and CRI alongside the profile when planning a complete installation.

Heat Dissipation, IP Ratings and LED Longevity

One of the most important — and most overlooked — functions of an aluminium LED profile is thermal management.

Why Heat Dissipation Matters

LED strips generate heat at the PCB level. Without a heat path away from the strip, this heat accumulates and raises the LED junction temperature. Every 10°C rise in junction temperature approximately halves the rated lifespan of the LED chips. A well-fitted aluminium profile in direct thermal contact with the strip's PCB acts as a passive heat sink, conducting heat away and dissipating it into the surrounding air. The result is a measurably longer operational lifespan — quality LED strips in aluminium profiles routinely achieve 30,000–50,000 hours of rated life under normal conditions.

To maximise thermal transfer, ensure the LED strip's PCB is in firm contact with the base of the profile channel. Some installers use a thin layer of thermally conductive adhesive tape to improve contact, particularly in recessed profiles where the strip may not press firmly against the aluminium by its own weight.

IP Ratings for Wet and Outdoor Locations

For installations in moisture-prone environments, the IP (Ingress Protection) rating of both the profile and the LED strip must be appropriate for the location:

  • IP20: Indoor, dry locations only — living rooms, offices, retail interiors.
  • IP44: Splash-proof — suitable for bathroom zone 2 (more than 0.6m from a water source) and covered outdoor locations.
  • IP65: Dust-tight and protected against water jets — bathroom zones 1 and 2, outdoor eaves, garden steps and covered terraces.
  • IP67: Fully dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion — garden path lighting, outdoor stair nosing and locations subject to heavy rain or hosing down.

Always match the IP rating of the profile to the IP rating of the LED strip inside it. An IP65 profile housing an IP20 strip does not create an IP65 system — the strip itself must also be rated for the environment.

EU Energy Efficiency Labelling

Since September 2021, the EU energy efficiency label uses a revised A–G scale for lighting products. When specifying LED strip systems for commercial projects, check the energy class of the complete system — profile, strip and driver — on the product data sheet. Most modern 24V COB and high-density SMD strips achieve energy class A or B under the new scale, making them compliant with current EU Ecodesign requirements and straightforward to document for building certification purposes.

Planning Your Installation: Drivers, Dimming and Colour Temperature

A complete LED profile system has three components: the profile itself, the LED strip, and the LED driver (also called an LED transformer or power supply). Getting the driver selection right is as important as choosing the correct profile type.

Selecting the Right LED Driver

Most LED strips run on 12V DC or 24V DC. For longer runs and higher-wattage installations, 24V is strongly preferred — it reduces voltage drop over distance and allows runs of up to 10m without a mid-point injection. To size your driver correctly:

  1. Calculate the total wattage of your strip: multiply the strip's wattage per metre (e.g. 14.4W/m) by the total run length in metres.
  2. Add a 20% headroom buffer — a driver running at 100% of its rated capacity runs hotter and has a shorter lifespan. A 5m run at 14.4W/m = 72W; choose a driver rated at 90W or above.
  3. Select a driver with the correct output voltage (12V or 24V) and a suitable enclosure rating for its installation location.

For ballasts and LED drivers, Leuchtmittel Verkauf stocks a full range of constant-voltage LED drivers suitable for 12V and 24V strip systems.

Dimming Compatibility

Not all LED strips and drivers support dimming, and not all dimming methods are compatible with all systems. The three most common approaches are:

  • PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming: A separate PWM dimmer controller is wired between the driver and the strip. Compatible with most 12V and 24V strips. Smooth, flicker-free dimming from 0–100%.
  • TRIAC dimming: The mains-side dimmer (similar to a conventional light dimmer) controls a TRIAC-compatible LED driver. Convenient for retrofit installations where a wall dimmer is already in place.
  • DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface): A digital control protocol used in commercial and office lighting. Allows individual or grouped control of multiple LED drivers from a central building management system. Relevant for retail, hospitality and large office projects.

For retail, gastronomy and showroom projects where precise scene control is needed, consider whether an LED profile system or a 3-phase power track system better suits your layout. Track systems offer repositionable spotlights; LED profiles deliver fixed linear illumination. Many professional installations combine both.

Retrofit: Replacing Fluorescent Battens with LED Strip in Profile

If you are upgrading an existing installation that uses T5 or T8 fluorescent lamps in surface-mounted battens, replacing them with an LED strip in an aluminium surface profile is a straightforward retrofit path. A 14.4W/m 24V COB strip in a 2m surface profile delivers comparable lumen output to a 36W T8 batten at roughly 40% of the energy consumption, with no starter, no flicker on start-up, and full dimmability. The aluminium profile can often be mounted in the same position as the old batten fitting using standard clips and fixings.

Applications: Home, Retail, Gastronomy and Architectural Projects

LED profiles suit an exceptionally wide range of applications — from a single kitchen cabinet run to a complete retail lighting scheme.

Residential Applications

  • Kitchen under-cabinet lighting: Surface mounted profiles in silver or white, fitted with an opal diffuser, provide even task lighting across worktops without visible hotspots.
  • Wardrobe and shelving lighting: Slim surface profiles (as narrow as 7.8mm wide) fit inside wardrobe interiors and on shelf edges without protruding.
  • Stair nosing: IP-rated stair nosing profiles inset into tread edges provide safe, attractive step lighting that is robust enough for daily foot traffic.
  • Cove and coving lighting: Profiles fitted along the ceiling-wall junction create indirect ambient lighting that makes rooms feel larger and more relaxed.
  • Bathroom mirror lighting: IP44 or IP65 surface profiles fitted above or beside bathroom mirrors provide flattering, even facial illumination.

Retail, Gastronomy and Showroom Applications

In retail and hospitality environments, LED profiles placed along shelving, display cases and architectural recesses put products and interiors in their best light — creating the kind of visual impact that draws customers in and encourages longer dwell time.

For shop-floor and display lighting where flexibility and repositionability are priorities, lighting systems including 3-phase track offer a complementary solution. LED profiles and track systems are frequently combined in the same installation: profiles for fixed linear accent lighting on shelving and plinths, track spotlights for adjustable product highlighting overhead.

For gastronomy and hotel projects, warm-white (2700K–3000K) strips with CRI ≥ 90 inside opal-diffused profiles create the intimate, flattering ambience that makes food and interiors look their best — a genuine wow effect that guests notice immediately.

Architectural and Commercial Projects

  • Office cove and indirect lighting: Suspended profiles or ceiling-recessed profiles with 4000K strips provide glare-free ambient light suitable for screen-based work.
  • Gallery and museum lighting: High-CRI (Ra ≥ 95) strips inside recessed or plaster-in profiles deliver accurate colour rendering for artwork without the heat or UV output of halogen alternatives.
  • Outdoor and garden: IP65 or IP67 profiles fitted along garden steps, path edges and outdoor architectural features provide safe, durable illumination that withstands the elements year-round.

Installation and Cutting Tips for DIY and Trade

Whether you are a homeowner fitting under-cabinet lighting for the first time or an electrician specifying a full retail installation, the installation principles for LED profiles are consistent.

Cutting to Length

Aluminium LED profiles can be cut to any length on site using a fine-toothed hacksaw or a mitre saw with a metal-cutting blade. Mark your measurement clearly with a marker pen, clamp the profile securely in a vice or mitre box, and cut steadily without forcing the blade. Always wear safety goggles and clear away aluminium swarf before inserting the LED strip. Cut the LED strip at the designated cut points (marked every 50mm or 100mm depending on the strip type) to match the profile length.

Fixing Methods

  • Mounting clips: Most profiles are supplied with plastic mounting clips that screw to the surface first; the profile then snaps into the clips. This is the standard method for surface and recessed profiles on timber, MDF and plasterboard.
  • Adhesive tape: Double-sided VHB (Very High Bond) tape can be used for lightweight surface profiles on smooth, clean surfaces such as glass shelving or painted MDF. Not suitable for overhead or high-temperature locations.
  • Routing a groove: For recessed profiles, a router or circular saw is used to cut a channel of the correct width and depth into the substrate. The profile sits in the groove and is secured with clips or adhesive.
  • Plastering in: Plaster-in profiles are nailed or screwed to the substrate at first-fix stage. The plasterer applies the skim coat over the flanges, leaving the aperture clear. The diffuser is fitted after the plaster has dried and been decorated.

DIY vs. Trade Checklist

DIY homeowner: - Measure the run length carefully and order 10% extra for cutting waste. - Check the profile's maximum strip width against your chosen strip before ordering. - Use a 24V system for runs over 3m to avoid voltage drop. - Fit the LED driver in a ventilated, accessible location — not sealed inside a cabinet.

Electrician / trade installer: - Specify driver wattage with 20% headroom above the calculated strip load. - Confirm dimming protocol (PWM, TRIAC or DALI) with the client before ordering drivers. - For IP-rated installations, ensure both the profile and the strip carry the correct IP rating for the zone. - Document energy class (EU A–G scale) for building certification if required.

FAQ – Questions & Answers

What size LED profile do I need for my LED strip?

The internal channel width of the LED profile must be equal to or wider than the LED strip you plan to install. Standard SMD LED strips are typically 8mm, 10mm or 12mm wide; high-density COB strips can be 12–20mm wide. Always check the maximum strip width specification listed for each profile before ordering. For 24V systems with runs over 3m, a wider internal channel also allows better airflow and heat dissipation around the strip.

Can LED profiles be plastered in?

Yes — plaster-in LED profiles (also called trimless profiles) are specifically designed to be set into walls or ceilings at first-fix stage, before plastering. The plasterer skims directly over the profile flanges, leaving a perfectly flush linear aperture in the finished surface with no visible housing. Plaster-in profiles must be installed before the plasterer arrives; retrofitting them into an already-plastered surface is not possible. They are popular in high-specification residential, kitchen and hospitality projects.

Are LED profiles available in 3 metre lengths?

Yes — many LED profiles are available in 3 metre lengths, alongside the more common 1m and 2m options. Three-metre lengths are particularly useful for commercial installations such as retail shelving runs, restaurant cove lighting and office indirect lighting, where fewer joins mean a cleaner, more professional result. Most aluminium profiles can also be cut to a shorter length on site using a fine-toothed hacksaw or mitre saw, so ordering a 3m length and cutting to fit is a practical approach.

Do LED profile kits include diffusers and end caps?

Most LED profile kits include a diffuser cover, end caps and mounting clips as standard. The diffuser cover — available in opal, semi-clear, transparent or black — snaps into the profile channel and spreads the light evenly. End caps close off the open ends of the extrusion for a neat finish and to prevent dust ingress. Mounting clips or brackets are used to fix the profile to the surface. Always check the individual product listing to confirm which accessories are included, as some profiles are sold as extrusion-only.

Are LED profiles available in 2 metre lengths?

Yes — 2 metre is the most widely stocked standard length for LED profiles and suits the majority of domestic and light commercial applications, including kitchen under-cabinet lighting, wardrobe interiors and retail shelving. Two-metre lengths balance ease of handling with minimal joins in the finished installation. For longer runs, 3 metre lengths are also available; for shorter runs, profiles can be cut to length on site with a fine-toothed hacksaw.

What is a surface mount LED profile?

A surface mount LED profile is an aluminium channel that fixes directly onto a wall, ceiling, shelf or other flat surface without any routing or cutting into the substrate. The profile is secured using mounting clips screwed to the surface, and the LED strip is inserted into the channel before the diffuser cover is snapped into place. Surface mount profiles are the fastest and most versatile installation method, suitable for kitchen cabinets, display shelving, retail fixtures and furniture lighting.

Are black LED profiles available?

Yes — black LED profiles are available in surface mount, recessed and corner styles. Black profiles are finished in either black anodised or black powder-coated aluminium and are often paired with a black or dark-tinted diffuser cover. They are particularly popular in retail display lighting, cinema rooms, restaurant interiors and contemporary residential projects where the profile should be visually recessive rather than a design feature in itself. Black body finishes are available in the same standard lengths (1m, 2m and 3m) as silver and white profiles.

How do I cut an aluminium LED profile to length?

To cut an aluminium LED profile to length, use a fine-toothed hacksaw or a mitre saw fitted with a metal-cutting blade. Mark your measurement clearly on the profile with a marker pen, clamp the profile securely in a vice or mitre box to prevent movement, and cut steadily without forcing the blade. Always wear safety goggles and remove all aluminium swarf from the channel before inserting the LED strip. Cut the LED strip itself at the designated cut points — marked every 50mm or 100mm depending on the strip type — to match the profile length.
